Day 2: Lake Akkeshi – Oysters, Shrimps, and Discovery

Today it was raining pretty hard, and we were scheduled to go to Lake Akkeshi for a boat ride – unfortunately, due to the weather, we weren’t able to go but we made the best out of the situation and the day ended on a positive note with new memories made.

We first went to Mr. Nakajima’s oyster farm where we had a short lecture on the various types of oysters and have a “behind the scenes” experience in the seafood business; in fact, we were even taught how to open an oyster using a blunt knife and how to eat it raw and fresh! The opening of the oyster was challenging, but the reward lies inside its shell.


Afterwards, we headed for the shrimp farm of Mr. Takada and had another short lecture. We were all pleasantly surprised to have been served fresh – just caught earlier that day – shrimp! It tasted so refreshing and delicious, everyone couldn’t stop eating.


We retired for lunch back at the inn and headed for the Akkeshi Waterfowl Observation Center and had an interactive time exploring the observation center.



Overall, it was a pleasant day with new knowledge obtained and new memories made.

(We even had ice cream afterwards!)
